Inspector Hendrey, of the Wangamii police district, was in New Plymouth yesterday on departmental business. A London cablegram reports the death of Mr. Edward Wainwright, the Yorkshire cricketer. Mr. Wainwright was 53 years old. He played in a test match against the Australians in 1893.

A New York cablegram reports the death of Mrs. Ella Wheeler Wilcox, at lier home at New Haven, Connecticut. Mrs. Wilcox was born in 1855 and married in 1884. She wrote a large number of poems. Senior-Sergeant J. C. Willia, of Wellington lias been sent to New Plymouth to take charge of the local police district during the indispositon of Su!bInspcetor Button. Sergeant Reed who came from Wanganui to fill the gap temporarily, returned home yesterday. Captain J. IT. Don, at present Military Equipment and Instructional Officer of the New Zealand Air Service, is relinquishing that appointment at his own request as_ he desires to return to private life (says a Press Association message from Chrigtchurch). Captain Don will be succeeded by Captain L. M. Isitt, who recently returned from active service, and who is a son of Mr. Isitt, MP. Leaving New Zealand as a sergeant in the Ist Rifle Brigade, Captain Isitt was wounded in France. He then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, in which lie' obtained his commission-
