BOWLING.

OPENING OF FIT2ROT GREEN. The weather was all that could be desired yesterday afternoon, when the Fitzroy. green was formally opened for the season. There was a large attendance o{ bowlers and visitors. Including members oF other clubs, while many ladies graced the proceedings with their presence, occupying for tho first time the raised seats which are part of tho improvements the club is carrying out at tho pavilion end of of the ground. When completed, this work, which includes a covered in afternoon tea pavilion, will give tho club a most attractive green. The turf was in excellent order, eliciting praise from all tho players and reflecting credit on the green warden and the caretakor (Mr. Hurle). Tho president, Mr. Stanley Smith, tendered a hearty welcome to the Tlsltors, and hoped they would have ah enjoyable afternoon. Referring to last season's play, he said the club had done fairly well in tournaments, and would probably be even more successful during the ensuing season. He particularly welcomed the haulers who had returned from the war, and, at his call, three hearty cheers were given them. After referring to tho Improvements that were being carried out, he presented the winner of the champion singles, Mr. McNeill, with the challenge cup, .and the runner-up, Mr. P. Jury, with a medal, Mr. Oxenham also receiving a medal as runnerup for the previous year. In acknowledging the cup, Mr. McNeill said no one was more pleased than himself.

Messrs F. C. .1. Bellrlnger (N«w Plymouth Club) Spurdle (Inglewood), Benton (Vogeltown), and Lobb (West End), thanked the president for the welcome tendered to visiting bowlers and complimented the club on the excellent state of the.green. Tho Stratford Bowling Club's green was officially opened for the season yesterday. Perfect weather prevailed and a laTge number of bowlers, including visitors from Hawora and Inglewood, wore present; also a number of ladles, ~ Tho president, Mr. W. J. McMillan, welcomed the visitors, and said ho believed that the 1919-20 howling season would be a record for the Dominion. He cordially welcomed Mr. Geo. Hall, an old member who had just roturned from the front. The green was a little dusty, but the cluh accepted no responsibility for that. They must blame the railway cut. which had delayed the arrival of lterblng materials necessary to put the green in order. On behalf of the club members he wished the new Avon Club success, and said he hoped the off-shoot would bo a credit to tho parent stem. (Applause) Mrs McMillan then threw the jack and delivered tho first bowl, after which tho president declared the green open. Delightful music was provided by an' orchestra consisting of Mr. Rogers. Misses Rogers. (2), Mr. r<mn nnd Kelly.
