ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) October 29. The farewell concert and social to Mr. W. A. Curteis took place at Mangatoki on Tuesday evening. The hall was crowded, and the concert, at which performers from all round the district took part, was of the very best. Mr. D. Astbury acted as chairman, and at, the conclusion of the programme invite* Mr and Mr Curteis to take scats upon the stage. Mr. Pearce, jnr., then presented Mr Curteis, on behalf of the returned soldiers, with a handsome Gold Albert. Mr. Nicholas, as secretary of the Athletic Club, of which Mr Curteis had been chairman, asked him to accept a handsome Gold Albert. Mr Nicholas was the next speaker. Mr Curteis had been secretary. of the Athletic Club for a number of years and had done much towards making successful meetings. He presented him with a Morris chair, with a silver plate suitably inscribed. Mr Astbury, as chairman of the school committee, expressed the appreciation of the community for the departing pair and the regret felt generally at their leaving the district. They all hoped that the step was one leading to promotion, and, on behalf of the people of the district, he presented a cheque for £3O and wished them God Speed. The recipients were given musical honors and hearty cheers'.
Mr Curteis, in replying, declared that his wife and himself would have fond memories of Mangatoki, where he' had spent eight years. The rest of the evening was spent in dancing. Slipper was provided as nsuaf by the ladies. A meeting of the Tennis Club was held on Tuesday evening at the Oddfellows' Hall. There were only about fifteen present. The balance-sheet, which showed a small credit, was read and adopted. Mr T. Cnimp was elected president and Mr. Sheath secretary. At a meeting called to revive the old cricket club, only two turned up, and tlie meeting was adjourned. The pipe hand, which visited New Plymouth on Labor Dav, left early in order to assist at the Stratford concert the same night, but about three miles out on the JiiTiction Road the motor gave out, and it took ovor an hour to put matters right. However, they filled in the time with songs and music. There seemed to be quite a lot of talent among them, and I expect to see some of them later on the concert platform. The party did not get back to Eltham till just on 9.30 and, of course, had to miss Stratford.
