STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All oommunlcatloas, letters, etc, left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) Stratford, Oct. 30. The social and. dance held in the Town Hall last evening was, like all similar functions organised by the Returned Soldiers' Association, a great success. The attendance was good, about 150 couples occupying the floor. In the earlier part of the evening the music was [ by Miss Kelly, and from 10 o'clock by Fox's special orchestra. Colonel Mitchell was present, and addressed those present for about half an hour on matters affecting the returned soldiers. He adversely criticised the present Government, particularly in connection with the pen? : on allowed to permanently disabled men, which, he held, was quite inadequate. A good supper was provided by lady friends. The M'sC. were Messrs D. 1 Malone and E. H. Young. The latter had taken a prominent part in the arrangements for the social, and his efforts contributed in no small measure to its success. The net profits will go to the funds of the Returned Soldiers' Association, and, as the money taken at the door was sufficient to cover expenses and most of the tickets were sold before the night of the social, these should amount to a fair sum. The returned soldier members of the Loyal Stratford Lodge of Oddfellows were entertained by. the lodge at supper at the Medina Tea Rooms on Tuesday evening Bro. G." Ireland presided, and there was a good attendance. A number of toasts were honored, and a musical programme was provided by Mr. Massey, Miss E. Moon, and Mr. P. Aitken. The Education Department's medical officer will be in attendance at tlw Stratford school to-morrow (Friday) and ' Monday. Mothers are invited to be' present at the examination. The Stratford candidates for the public service examination, which will be held from November 19 to 26, will sit in the Parish Hall. The rose bowl, valued at 50 guineas, presented by Mr. Campbell Jackson as a prize for most points in Frieaians at the Stratford A. and P. Show, is now on view in Messrs Weston Bros.' window.
