THE MATAURA SEAT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gore, Last Night. Mr. Alex McLaehlan, of Tuturau, has been selected the Labor candidate for the Mataura seat. THE MOTUEKA SEAT. Wellington, Last Night. The Hon. R. McKcnzie has intimated that he does, not intend to contest Motueka as has been reported. MR. ASTBURY AT OPUNAKE. Mr. Astbury delivered an address at Opunake on Monday evening. A fair gathering of electors wero present. Mr. O'Brien was voted to the chair, and in introducing the candidate referred to the part Mr. Asttbury's lads had taken m the war, one having paid the complete sacrifice to protect our liberty. He bespoke a fair hearing for the "candidate, though he thought it went without the asking. Mr. Astbury's address was on the lines already published, and in answer to questions he agreed, if returned, to further the interests of Weirimu Road settlers, who were without bridges and at times isolated by swollen rivers. He agreed that Opunake should have its own hospital, and stated thai he was ' opposed to legislation to revert to 11 o'clock licenses. A vote of thanks closed ,a very satisfactory and sympathetic meeting. l »; .?• , Masiera addressed a . fairly wolUa*tond*d' meeting of electors at Maljon last evening, and at the conclusion was accorded a vote of thank*. To-night he speaks at the Town Hall,' Stratford, giving prominence to certain subjects as advertised on page I of this A meeting of Mr. S. jQ. Smith's supporters was held last night, Mr W. Healy presiding. After a general discussion on the present position and the probability of any change taking place, it was decided to adjourn until Mr Smith returns to New Plymouth, the date of the meeting to be decided by the executive committee.
