IRELAND.
LORD FRENCH ON THE OUTLOOK. "A-SYSTEM OF INTIMIDATION." LAW AND ORDER ESSENTIAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, October 22. Lord French, speaking at Wallasey, said the great difficulty in Ireland had been due to the rise of a new element ia the already complicated vortex: of Irish politics. This element wanted complete separation; nothing more nor less.
Their so-called Government, an illegal and insane body, possessed a secret army called the Irish Volunteers. Attached to it were bodies of assassins whose business was to commit outrage and murder upon any section of the community which questioned its decrees. The result was a complete system of intimidation. The population was frightened into screening the criminals and the courageous and devoted efforts of the police had been rendered abortive. Lord French added that the Government was anxious to give full justice to all classes and denominations in Ire-land.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received Oct. 24, 0.20 p.m. London, October 22. , Lord French said the Sinn Fein Government, to which the Irish volunteers» were attacked, was the latest and the greatest difficulty in. Irish politics. The Government was anxious to give every class of Irishman self-determinatiou, but this was impossible till law and order was finally established. Rumors of coercion and harshness in Ireland should be considered in this light.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. A PADRE'S ARREST. AUSTRALIA TAKES ACTION. Sydney, October 24.
