N.Z. FARMERS' UNION.
MAKETAWA BRANCH. On Monday, 13th inst, a sufficient number of members of the Maketawa branch of the N.Z.F.U. assembled at the factory to hold their monthly meeting. The chairman of the branch (Mr. J. H. Stephens) presided. The secretary (Mr. J. B. Simpson) read correspondence as follows: From the Postmaster-General in answer la application, authorised at the last meeting, for improved postal service for this district, stating that tho departmental officers had been instructed to report thereon. It 1 was resolved that the secretary be representative of the branch to use his best endeavors in the interests of the settlers. From the provincial executive, in reply to inquiry anent the standardised account book recommended for use, in connection with which the secretary was directed to remit payment as noted. Also, in answer to remit sent, conveying this branch's opinion as to the steps fliat should bo taken to deal frith the "cattle tick" pest, which showed that the N.Z.F.U. Conference was urging the Government to act on lines almost identical with the ideas expressed, at tho same time conveying the impression that there did not seem to be any reason at present for fear of its spreading locally. From the manager of the Farmers' Cooperative Organisation Association, stating that new proposal.! for insurance with the Fanners' Insurance Company could be dealt with by the association's Inglewood branch, and that the belief that such business Jjad to be referred to the Eltham office of the society was wrong, which reply was received, with the approval of the meeting. < The report of the action taken hy the conference of representatives of the union in Wellington wiSh Tegard to noxious weeds, and the steps recommended to secure purity of seeds supplied to farmers throughout the Dominion, was read, and warmly welcomed by the members present, who voiced their feeling that such facts showed the value of the union's influence in matters vitally important to the whole state. The same opinion was expressed regarding the amalgamation ot the co-operative societies of New Zealand in one federation, The desirability of obtaining basic slag was discussed, and the secretary was directed to make inquiries on the subject.
