THE TAINUI INQUIRY.
STATE OF THE BENZINE CARGO. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, October 21. At the Tainui inquiry, the evidence Of Hood, ships' surveyor, was continued. The ploughs in the Tainui's hold rested on the white pine case wocd and, if they rested on the vertical end of the case, the wood was of ample strength to hold them. If the ploughs shifted the cases would probably be injured or broken. Captain Wilcox, Assistant-Superin-tendent of Marine, gave evidence that the master and mate were cautioned against talcing leaky cases of benzine. Witness was not present during the loading. Ne complaint reached him regarding the condition of the cases. He visited the ship after the loading was completed and the hatches were battened down ready for sea, when there was nothing to indicate that there were leaky benzine cases about. Witness had a look round and into the bilges where it was possible. There were no signs of benzine, and he did not smell any fumes.
