WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) October 21. At the special meeting of the Waitara Borough Council held on Friday, 17th inst., it was decided to raise the price of water to all consumers of extraordinary supply outside the borough, to £0 all round. Inside the borough it was decided to raise the price to users on a flat rate of 33 1-3 'per cent.; the Cement Pipe Co. from fid to Is per thousand gallons, and the Waitara Koad Dairy Factory to 1/3 per 1090 gallons. At the meeting of the Soldiers' Welcome Home Ball Committee, held for the purpose of wading up the function, it wa=i found that the expenses had exceeded the receipts by about £1(1, and the amount handed over from the Sol'diers' Farewell Committee was encroached on to that extent. TSe balance. £37, is to form the nucleus for a memorial to Waitara soldiers, which it is hoped to have erected in Stafford Street. A new tongue has been placed in tlie local firebell with the expectation that it would improve its sound carrying qualities, but in this the brigade 'was disappointed, as is is still far from satisfactory, and at the trial given on Friday evening it did not seem much better than it was before. The mart, held in St. John's Hall on Saturday in aid of the vicarase fund, was a huge success, the takings being CSS. .Ml the outlying districts gave a hand, with the result that the stalls were well stocked with produce, etc, Mrs Lenwr was in charge of a Lepperfon stall and three T T renui ladies gave assistance. The following were in charge of the various stalls: Mesdamos Bicheno (sewing), Lund (sweets), .Toll' (produce, etc.), Redward f afternoon tea), Ohappell (bran tub, Christmas tree, etc.).
