DISTRICT NEWS.

WAITOITOI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) 'l'he annual lull fair liclil at Mr. .Ncwti'V. King's YValwakalbo yards on Wednesday last attracted a fair number of farmers from tills end of tho district. Judging by the keen competition for the pedigree lots offered (especially tho Jerseys), breeders are full.v aware that the days when any old sort of a bull would do have passed, and to produce good saleable heifers the best milking strains must bo procured to breed from. Mr. J. T. Phillips purchased General Marquis, by Peggy's Campanile—Genoa's Pride, at 51gns., whilst Mr., S. J. Sutton secured a 2-year-old by Hawkesbury Majestic—Haivkesbury Beauty, at 4")gns. Grandad's Prince, by Grandad—Canpbell's Queen, was bought by Mr. J, L. Jones, of Urutl, at 45gns. Some rather good catches of whitebait have been made in the Mimi River and elsewhere recently, but with prices ranging anywhere from 100 to 200 per cent, above pro-war rates, they are somewhat of a luxury to tho ordinary household. It Is rather difficult to see whers the necessity for such big prices exists, as it . can hardly be put down to the. increased cost of production, and the time of the majority of those who catch them is scarcely so valuaMe as to warrant such high prices. It is understood that an effort is to he made to revive 1 cricket in and around Urenui. If this is So, there is no doubt that the movement would be well supported, as rtow things are getting back to normal', there is no reason why tho good old game should not be got going again. Several of the oldest players, who have done their bit at the front, are now back again, and there are a lot of younger one's coming on who, no douDt, xty want a little encouragement, to form a fairly strong club, ~ A few years ago, Urenui was able to put a senior ttnd junior team In the North Taranaki competitions, and both rendered good accounts of themselves; In fact, the latter on one occasion succeeded In capturing - the shield, whilst the seniors wero 'runners-up for the cup. The recreation ground forms a most excellent playing field, arid all that is wanted is a united effort to' make. a.start and In a short whlla'things would, be .In full swing. On Thursday and Friday last, the school teachers from the surrounding districtassembled at the' Urenui School to receive' instruction in a-course of physical- under the supervision of "the .North Taranaki Education Board's "representative. most successful, and -no doubt tha children will benefit accordingly. On Thursday evening a most pleasant little dance was held In the Urenul Hall- Owing to the short notice , the attendance was not 30 large as it otherwise would have been. Nevertheless those present enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Mr. D. George aoteo u M.C. In his usual successful manner, whilst the music supplied by Miss A. Terell, left nothing to be desired. Extras were .played by Mr. L. Spurr. During the evening light refreshments wcro handed round, and were much appreciated. from a private letter received by a resident in this district from the Old Country, I loam that the English farmers are getting 2s per lb. for their cheese, threo weeks old, off the shelves. The New Zaland producer obtain? 10%td In the cool stores for first grade, and it would lie rather interesting to know Just how much the Dominion article Is netting the Imperial Government. If It Is inytttlng like the figure quoted above', the ranrtot must have throw in for a fairly decent win when they purchased the whole of the striput for two years. Rather than do anything that would savor of profiteering, n» douht the authorities will send along t. pretty decent cheque ai the end of the 3euson, or otherwise make a considerable reduction to th« con-, sumer at Home.
