TARANAKI AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. ' The annual meeting _of the Taranakl A. and! P. Society was held 'on Saturday last, there being a fair attendance. j CHAIRMAN'S ADDRESS, The president (Mr. J. 5... Connett), who occupied the chair, moved the adoption of the annual report (which has already been published). In dealing with the general affairs of the society, Mr. Connett said it would be gratifying to members to find steady progress being made; war conditions had not been conducive to making headway, but a strong feeling had existed that it would be suicidal to allow the Society to go. back after such a good start had '>een made on the new ground. The show continued to Improve each yetv; breeders had shown their sympathy with the society's efforts in a practical way, pending exhibits long distances at considerable expense to take' part, whilst its officials had endeavoured to show them every attention during their stay and to .make their visit pleasant and enjoyable. The public also keenly supported , the autumn fixture. The chairman then referred to the decision to provide more covered-in accommodation, and also to the arrangement to lease an adjoining section from the Defence Department H» then dealt with the question of the Winter Show, and the recent efforts that had been made to ensure Its being continued. In referring to the balance-sheet, sir. connett said it was r«ry ■ sstlMactory indeed. He referred with pleasure to the increase in the membership and said. tb» fact. t|ha,t they had 820 financial, members went to show quite comflHSjlvely thaft interaaf was being well' maintained in the society. A deficit of £287 had been wiped out during the year, and there was a credit at the bank of JJI27 13s sd, whilst £75 had been donated by way of debentures. Mr. Connett paid a tribute to the untiring efforts of the committee, and paid a special compliment t-> Mr. Grant (senior vice-president), who had no' spared himself In the least in .the interests of the society. He added a special word of praise to the ladies and said the society was greatly Indebted to them for their splendid efforts. So long as the society had' the support of the ladies It need have no fear ao to the future He then formally moved the adoption of the report and took the opportunity of appealing to members to extend the same assistance and loyalty, to the incoming president as they had done to him during his term of oflSJe. Mr.-Grant, In acknowledging the compliment which had been paid io him by electing him president, said it would be his ambition to carry on the affairs o* the society as successfully as they had been during the past few years. He pointed .out, however, that no matter how enthusiastic a man might be, ho could not hope to succeed -without the co-operation of all the members, which he believed would be forthcoming. (Applause.) The vice-presidents also returned thanks for their election. WINTER SHOW. Mr. C. Fairbrothrt 1 , in accordance with notice of motion, moved that the winter show Co abandoned This was seconded by Mr. .' nsher, both speakers contending that while ■•k sreatest benefit accrued to the town, the ■■■h-i-trv members were allowed to carry pracIJr the whole burden. A lenjtby discussion ensued, during the rwiFe of whloh Mr. Connott referred to :ii« public meeting which had been held to consider this question, to the committee that tppointed to go into the matter, and to •he recommendations of that committee. Eventually, Mr. Moore moved an amendsien», that, of the proposed abandonment of the Winter Show be deferred, •ind that a conference be held between the New Plymouth committee and the following committee from the Society: Messrs. W B. Grant, A. E. Washer, C. Dobson, L. Jackson, H. C. Sampson, B. Honeyfleld, G, W. Browne, and C. Hoskin, for the purpose of agreeing on a line of action to be taken oy the town committee, and that a further general meeting of members of the society be called at a later date to confirm the action agreed upon.—The amendment was seconded by Mr. W. Stanley and carried by n large majority. NEW MEMBERS.
The following new mSihbers were fleeted: Messrs. : G. Burkett, W. A. Marsh, R. Burke, W. T. Pratt, J. T. Pratt, (J. Morton, E. Orant, and T. Dickson. Reference wis made to Mf. H. C. Sampson's handsome donation of 56 guineas (the proceeds of the sale of a yearling pedigree Jersey), and in recognition he was made a life member of the society. Mr. Sampson <ul!.ibi,v rerdletf an<l said he appreciated the' honor which had been conferred upon him. He also Intimated that he was quite prepared to allow the president to> go out to his farm and pick out for the society another pedtaee bull calf next autumn. TOTES OP THANKS. Hearty votes of thanks were acocrded to the ladies fori, their valuabls sarvlaes In the Interests of the society, to the retiring president (Mr. Connett) for his untiring and unselfish work, to the press, to the outgoing committee, to Mr. G. Colson, and all who had In any way assisted the society during the past year. GENERAL. Mr. S. Vickers referred to the injustice tc the farmer owing to the embargo oh hides, and on his motion it was decided to urge the Government to remove the restrictions. Copies of the resolution will also be forwarded to members of Parliament in the Taranakl district. Mr. A. J. Luxton, of Omata, very generously offered to donate to tho socletv for competition in the Jirsey section a cup valued at £lO 10s, the conditions to be decided upon by the committee. Mr. Luxton was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for his handsome donation. A letter from the New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League with reference to the proposal to hold a carnival week here early In.Uie new year was read, and the matter was referred to the incoming committee.
