Irving, who was in his forty-ninth year, was the eldest son of the famous Sir Henry Irving, ajid he earned a world-wide reputation as au actor of a high standard. He first appeared on the stage in 1801, and though he was called to the Bar three years later he made the stage his profession, and, in addition to becoming a foremost actor, he has of late years been one of the leading actor-managers in London. Iu 1911-12 he made an Australian tour, and on that occasion he visited Jvew Zealand.]
