'. The crack southern horseman, J. Olsen, has swept all before him since accepting a retainer from the successful Wellington owner, Mr. H. W. Brown, and Olson's fine exhibition on Loyal Arch at Masterton proves what a good horseman he is. Olsen will ride over sticks as well as on the flat for Mr. Brown, and should make a name for himself. GLOAMING, THE BRILLIANT. When Gloaming was called upon to fulfil his Initial engagement at four years old in the Spring Stakes last month at Rosehlll, he gave pointed evidence that Ute marked brilliancy he developed at a year younger Is still with him, and that he would succeed in placing himself well In the limelight in the weight-for-age class at the A.J.C. meeting now in progress at Randwick, was an opinion widely expressed (writes the Auckland Herald sporting editor). In the decision of the Spring Stakes at Randwick last Saturday Gloaming certainly suffered defeat, but it was only by a head, and the one that finished In front was the doughty Poitrel. The Craven Plate, run on Wednesday, found Gloaming on hand to try conclusions with the weigbt-for-age talent over a mile and oquarter. Poltrol was an absentee, but the brilliant Wolaroi was on hand, as well aa the Metropolitan Stakes winner Rebus. Gloaming had natters all his own way in disposing of his two doughty opponents, and a strong opinion prevails that he could have put up a fresh time record for 10 furlongs, had such been required. RACEHORSE NOMENCLATURE. • With the beginning of each season and the appearance of two-year-olds, turf followers ore obliged to sit up and take notice of the new names that besprinkle the race books, and naturally one's attention turns to nomenclature. The average horseowner knows as much about the naming of horses as he does about the treatment of lefhargla encephalitis, possibly less, and year after year, the same stylo of long-winded, senseless, mean-nothing names are hung on horses that certainly deserve a better fate. With the chairman of the conference acting as censor, one would not expect duplication or similarity of nomenclature, but, unfortunately at times Sir Jarge must be dozing. It would bo Interesting to know how many Some Boys, Shamrocks, Arc Lights, Cashmeres, Ridicules, and Arizona's we have had, yet these names are still being passed. And then again wo are faced with puzzlers like Demos and Demon. Hyrax and Styrax, Aratlka and Aritlka, Gloaming and Gleaming, which almost equal tha Alteration—Altercation, Bisogne—Blsognlo, and King Lupin—Ring Lupin abominations of recent years. If their equal can be mentioned it may be the recent crop of "Absurds," of which Humbug, Quip, Caricature, Serious, and Tivoli, are the best. "Humbug," by Absurd—Eulogy, is really a gem. Then again honorable mention Is due to Mr. G. D. Greenwood for "Yawn," by Cooltrlm—Drowsy; to Mr. W. G. Stead for "Truthful." by Demosthenes—Lily White, and "Delight," a smart combination of Demosthenes and Sunlight. "Many Colors" Is not out of the way for the cold by Heather Mlxnor "Sunny Smile" for a filly by Sunny Lake—Prank. "Aphrodlsla," by Martian—Paphla, Is a name which will tie most punters up, but It is fairly appropriate, though its meaning may be beyond the understanding of most racegoers. "Roman Arch," by Marble Arch—Romola Is passable, as )s "Fabrlnade," by Fabrikoff—Pasquinade. "Halsea" Is another named by the combining method, being a gelding by Hallowmas—Sea Spray "Martial Dance," by Martian—Two Step, "Happy Days," by Merry Moment—Jeanne D'Arc, "Bonlhrook," by Bonlforra—Splash, and "Equitable." by Hallowmas—Equitas, read best of the others, STRAY ITEMS.
