MOTHER COUNTRY.
THE NATION'S TASK.
INCREASE OF PRODUCTION VITAL.
By Telegraph.—Press Aaan.—OopyrlsM. Received Oct. 17, 11,45 p.m.
London, Oct. 16. Mr. Lloyd George, speaking at Sheffield, made an eloquent appeal to the nation to settle down to work in earnest and to increase national production. The National Debt prior to the war was £645,000,000,, and to-day it was nearly £8,000,000,000. The whole nation had to bear a heavier burden than ever before. The laboring classes had higher wages-and shorter hours and a better standard of living than ever before, and they dreaded a return to the pre-war conditions. There was only one mode of escape therefrom. They must increase the national income by increasing the national production. That was the urgent need of the day in this country and every other country. COASTAL SHIPPING COMBINE. Received Oct. 17, 7.40 p.m. London, Oct. 16. Four-fifths of the British coasting tonnage is already included in a huge amalgamation, of which Sir Owen Phillips and Sir Alfred Read are the chief organisers. The opinion is expressed that the organisation is part of Sir Eric Geddes' transport scheme.—Reuter. NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL COUNCIL. Received Oct. 17, 7.40 p.m. London, Oct. 16. A serious obstacle to the establishment of a National Industrial Council has arisen owing to a demand of the Workers' Section of the Council demanding that farm workers shall be included in the 48-hour week. It is considered unlikely that the Government will accede to the demand.—Reuter.
