FLIGHT ACROSS AMERICA, SEVEN AIRMEN KILLED. By Telegraph.—Press New York, Oct. 10. Lowell Smith's machine was burned at Buffalo. Maynard is expected to reach Chicago to-day. His speed occasionally exceeds 100 miles hourly. i Seven are dead to date owing to accidents. Nine machines bound west have reached San Francisco and six have arrived at New York. Caible Assn. THE AUSTRALIAN FLIGHT. Received Oct. 17, 7-50 p.m. London, Oct. 16. The departure of the Ldrkin-Sopwith aeroplane for Australia is definitely fixed tor 10 o'clock on Monday morning. Searching tests were carried out today, and reveal that the machine exceeds the highest expectations. It travelled, fully loaded, at the rate of 107 miles per hour at a height of 6000 feet, with a petrol consumption of 13 gallons, being two gallons under the estimate. This increases the range to 1600' miles, which is much more than was hoped for.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
