GOVERNMENT TAKES ACTION. TO REPEAL COUNTY COUNCIL'S POWER. By Wire—Own Correspondent. Wellington, Last Night. The Counties Amendment Bill, introduced by the Hon. J. B. Hine to-day, repeals Section 8 of the Counties Amendment Act, IMS, under which it has been proposed to levy a wheel tax in a portion of Taranaki. The Bill provides that the Government, by Order-in-Council, may empower County Councils to make by-laws with respect to the licensing of Vehicles using any- road within a county and prohibiting the using of vehicles on any such road without a, license. The regulations will specify the fees to be paid to the county funds in respect of such licenses. The by-laws may appoint different fees to be paid in respect of different classes of vehicles, having regard to the weight of the load that may be carried on any Buch vehicle, the width of the tyres of the wheels, the number of passenger* permitted to be carried, and in the case of vehicles drawn by animals the number and species of animals to be so used.
