SALARIES OF THE HEAD MEN. By Wire—Own Correspondent. Wellington, Last Night. The Government Railways Amendment Bill dealing with classification has 'been introduced and referred to the .Railways Committee. The classification of the first division provides for the following maximum salaries:— General manager—not exceeding £3OOO. Assistant general manager—£l26o, Chief mechanical engineer (in charge of locomotive carriage and wagon branch)—£l2so. Chief Traffic manager—£l2so. Chief engineer (in charge of maintenance branch)—£l2so. Chief accountant— £IOOO. Comptroller of Stores—£Boo. Signal engineer—£9oo. Any member may be promoted from any lower to any higher class, subdivision, sub-class, grade or sub-grado if the permanent head' of the Department certifies that by reason of such member possessing special merit and, ability such promotion is warranted.
