ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. K. A start has been made with tha tarsealing of Boylan Road. About two miles have to be done,' and the work will be carried out as expeditiously as possible. As the road is narrow, drivers of vehicles would be considering their own interests if they travelled by the Mountain Road during the fine weather. Eltham ha» resumed the re-con-struction work in connection with the drainage, for which a .sum of £IO,OOO was borrowed. The Eltham Bowling Club's green was opened for play to-day, but the official opening of the season will not take place till the 30th. Over £IOO has been spent on the green during the winter, and it never 'been in better order than it is now. A large number of new players have joined this season. The Farmers' Co-operative Association expect that a start will be made with the new building they are erecting on the corner section opposite the present premises in about a month. The building is to be of concrete and will cover the whole section. At a special meeting of« the Eltham County Council yesterday, over which Mr. C. J. Belcher presided, a resolution was passed levying a rate to provide for the payment of interest and principal on the South Riding loan. The county clerk informed the Hews' correspondent that the rates are coming in well, and compared with the same period last year, they are £7OO to the good. This is accounted for partly by the fact that the .demands were sent out earlier. Nothing lias been done yet in the direction of calling a further conference of local bodies to consider the question of opening a quarry at the mountain. The 'chairman of the County Council has been too busy toattend to the matter yet, but will proibably do so on his return from Wanganui where be lias gone on dairy factory business. A short sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held to-day, Messrs. J. W. Stubbs and Jas, Phillips, J-P.'s occupying the bench. Charges against two men of having been on licensed premises after hours were adjourned. Samuel Cameron. charged with threatening behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace win fined 10s with costs 7s, and a charge against the same defendant of assault was withdrawn. , Judgment was given for plaintiffs by default in a civil action in which A. C. Hill claimed from J. Collins £8 Is lOd. Costs amounting to £2 2s were allowed. It will pay ladies to visit Eltham to see the window display of lovely spring millinery and summer wear now showing at Shipton's Corner. Pretty hats, up-to-date in fashion and designed for immediate wear. To visit Shipton's is a short cut to economy.—Advt.
