A QUAKER SETTLEMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. The Society of Friends has jjst purchased four dwellings, with land approximating 30 acres, on St. John's Hill, adjoining Virginia Lake, i They intend to develop a boarding school and Quaker settlement generally. GISBORNE IMPROVEMENTS. Gisborne, Last Night Borough loan proposals totalling £145,000 were submitted to the ratepayer to-day. They are divided into six issues, two ferro-eoncrete bridges over the town rivers, reserves, street formation, i'e Hapara (suburban) requirements, and one mile of concrete road in Gladstone Road. All the proposals were carried except that of Gladstone Road. FURNITURE TRADES CONGRESS Dunedin, Last Night. The biennial congress of the United Furniture Trades Federation of New Zealand opened to-day, delegates being present from Wellington, Christchureh, and Dunedin. A remit asking the congress whether, as the cost of living in Wellington was higher than elsewhere, the WellingU ii Union would be allowed to approach the Court for a higher award than that asked in other districts, was rejected, as being opposed to the principles of the national award and conditions. Congresß decided to use the strength of the Federation to obtain a Dominion award for wickerworkers. It was decided to ask the Government for a heavier duty on wicker furniture and basket ware, in order to foster this industry in New Zealand.
