Mr W. Perham, of! Auckland, and formerly of Sew Plymouth, is on a short visit to the district. Tiie Taranaki Education Board yesterday accepted with regret the resignation of Mr T. Buchanan as representative of the North Ward on the board. The death of Mr Ernest Frederick Daniel, at one time a resident of Queenstown, is reported from Brisbane, Queensland. Mr Daniel, who was the third son of the late Mr Theophilus Daniel, ex-M.P. for Wallace, was born in Riverton. He served his apprenticeship as a draper, but, owing to indifferent health, crossed to Australia. For five years he acted- as secretary to Sir Patrick Jennings, New South Wales. He returned to New Zealand, but eventually returned to Australia, making Brisbane his home. At the time of his death h e was engaged well-boring for water in the Northern Territory. Mr Daniel was twice married, and leaves a widow (the daughter of Inspector Sullivan, Brisbane) and seven children. He took an active part in military affairs during the war, and for some time served in the Coast Defence Brigade in Queensland. A severe blow to him was the loss of bis two eldest sons, who enlisted and landed on Gallipoli, and after the battle of Lone Pine were reported missing. Dr. Cyril J. A, Griffin, D.5.0., son of the Rev. C. Griffin, of Mount Eden, who arirved in Wellington with his wife by the troopship Adolph Woermann, took his science and arts course at the Auckland University College, and was mathematical master at the Auckland Hoys' Grammar School for three vears. In 1007 he left Auckland 'to take a medical course at the London University. He intended to return to New Zealand early in 1015 to commence practice, but when the war broke out he was one of the first doctors to volunteer for active service, his commission bearing the date, of August sth, 1914. Dr. Griffin was through the Mons retreat, and was also present at many important battles. He was on the Western front, continuously for four years and seven months. He gained the D.'S.O. decoration, was mentioned in dispatches, and was acting-lieutenant-colonel for the last two years of the war.
