A public meeting is to be held in the Soldiers' Club to-night to consider the proposal of the Taraiiaki A. and P, Society to abandon the holding of the winter show, and to see if some means cannot be found for retaining the show.
Napier has decided again to hold its Mardi firas during the Christmas season. A Queen Election with a trip to Sydney and £25 to spend on the way as the first prize will be a feature.— Press Association.
The Education Board decided yesterday to grant a whole holiday to the schools in the Central Ward on November 27, being people's day at the "Stratford Show.
Sir Joseph Ward has just completed thirty-two years' service as a member of the Now Zealand Parliament. He was first elected as representative for Awafua in September, 18S7, and has represented the same electorate ever since. The Taranaki Education Board yesterday granted permission to the residents of the Dudley School district to erect a memorial in the school grounds in honor of the men of the district who served in the great war, subject to the site of the memorial, being approved by the board's architect.
Fishing .prospects in the streams about the Stratford district arc, states the Post, reported to be most encoura"ing to sportsmen, and are far ahead of last year's experiences. Mr Stewart Campbell, who secured eight very fine fish'on Sunday, says that lie had "splendid sport.
In connection with the social to be held in the bandroom on Friday evening next, which is being tendered to the bandsmen and the Citizens* Committee by the new president (Archdeacon F. G. Evans), it is the wish of the promoter that ex-members of the band and returned soldier bandsmen (brass or reed) who may be in town that evening should make a point of being present, as they will be specially welcome. Each bandsman and committeeman is expected to bring along a lady friend, as musical items, dancing, etc., will be indulged in.

In the course of a discussion at the Wellington City Council the Mayor stated 'that not a single tender had been received for the cottages proposed to be erected at Maranui. The difficulty of obtaining labor was most acute.
At a reception at Wellington to Sergeant Loveday, winner of the King's Prize at Bisley, Colonel Collins announced that the Defence Department had cabled for 10,000 rifle barrels, which he hoped would 'be available for use within six weeks or two months.—Press Assn.
In the course of their report to the Education Board yesterday, the delegates who attended the recent Education Boards' Conference stated that it was decided to form a Federation of the Education Boards in th e Dominion to take united action on matters affecting the educational welfare of the commui> ity. Mr Forsyth was elected president and Mr G. L. Stewart was appointed secretary, both being of Wellington. Mr R. Masters was appointed the board's representative on the Executive.
On Tuesday, reports the Star, the Hawera police arrested an elderly man named Alfred Roberts, on a charge of having, on October 7, stolen a cheque valued at £2 15s, the property of Mads Gundersen. The accused was brought before Mr. W. K. Wallace, J.P., in the Police Court this morning, and, upon the application of Sergeant Henry, a remand was granted until Monday morning. The ( accused denied the charge. A communication was received by the Education Board yesterday from the Assistant-Director of Education to the effect that it had been decided to issue licenses to teach dating from October 1, 1919, to all uncertificated soldier teachers, to enable boards to appoint soldier teachers to any position for which it considers they are competent. The department asked for a list of all the uncertificated soldier teachers in the district together with the position of each before joining the forces, his teaching service at 30th September last, his period of active service and any other information considered useful to the department. At about 4.30 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon a motor lorry, belonging to the Farmers* Co-op., after rounding the corner of Union Street and High Street, HaVera, had some mishap to its steering gear, and the driver (Mr. Parfitt) apparently lost control. The vehicle took a very tortuous course down High Street, and finally crashed into the doorway of Messrs Bennett and Sutton's shop, smashing the large window on the left hand side to atoms. Fortunately nobody was hurt, and the lorry, save for a bent splashboard, appeared to have escaped injury.—Star.
At yesterday's meeting of the Education Board the chairman (Mr R. Masters) mentioned the matter of "tooth brush" drill, which Dr Gunn had. suggested Ho him might with advantage be introduced into some of the local schools. It had alreadv been introduced in some schools in Wanganui and Hawke's Bay, and h e thought the board might take the matter up, though the expense should rightly be a charge upon the department. He suggested that it might lie tried in the Courtenav Street School, and if the board supplied the brushes the committee mi<rht provide the muss and a place to kee"p them properly separated. The suggestion was adopted.
William Fox's photo-melodrama, "Woman and the Law." produced under the direction of R. A: Walsh, will be the attraction at Everybody's Theatre to-night. This picture' based on a divorce suit and subsequent murder trial that set the whole country talking a short time ago, is presented with telling force and thoroughness. The whole play is centred around a question of fundamental interest to every woman, namely, "Are there provocations which justify a woman to kill."
