ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
FATAL MOTQR ACCIDENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 7. Thomas Smith, an elderly retired farmer, of Pahautanui, who 'was knocked down by a motor car in the city on September 22, died in hospital on Saturday night.. When taken to the hospital after the accident Smith was able to walk, and was found to be suffering from a fractured shoulder. He appeared to be making a good recovery till Saturday, when he became worse and faded away, apparently from heart failure due to shock. Evidence at the inquest showed that the ear was going slow. Deceased apparently did not hear the horn, anl walked right into the car. The inquest was adjourned for the evidence of rela-! tives. DEATH FROM HEART DISEASE. Wellington, Last Night. At the inquest on Thomas Smith, who was knocked down by a motor car on September 22. and died in the hospital on Saturday last, the coroner returned a verdict that death was due to heart disease. A MYSTERY CLEARED UP. Auckland, Last Night. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of a man named John Walker Dyson ,from the Defence Department'* steamer Lady Roberts, on September 24 last, was cleared up to-day bv the discovery of the bodv floating iii the harbor. The inquest was adjourned. THE TAKAPUNA FATALITY. Auckland, Last Night. At the inquest into the death of Benjamin Melville, who was found shot in a bathroom of his residence yesterday, a verdict was returned that, death was due to a gunshot wound self-inflicted, while in a state of nervous depression.
