HAWERA PRISONERS SENTENCED.
AT WELLINGTON SUPREME COURT. At, the Wellington Supreme Court on Monday three prisoners convicted at Hawera on various charges were brought before the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) for sentence. THEFT OF A HORSE AN.J TRAP. John Brown and Charles Frederick Tapp, convicted at Hawera on September 12 of the theft of a horse and trap and an attempt to sell them in order that they might get away from New Zealand, pleaded guilty. His Honor, dealing with the case of Tapp. said that since accused was a first offender he would deal lightly with him He appeared to be too fond of drink, and not very industrious, but he would be admitted to probation for a term of two years on strict condition that he did not touch liquor or enter a hotel bar, and that he reported monthly to the proba- j tion oiliccr. The other prisoner, Brown, a returned soldier, was given eighteen months' reformative treatment, and his Honor leftj it to the Prison Board to determine where to send him. His Honor reproved Brown i for having led his younger fellowprisoner astray, and remarked that it was no doubt upon encouragement from him that Tapp had assisted in the theft of the horse and trap. • I FALSE PRETENCES.
A Maori named Hui Kai Thompson appeared for sentence on a charge of false pretences, having been committed from Hawcra. He pleaded guilty. His Honor remarked that, in view of the prisoner's long list of previous convictions for similar offences, he. would sentence him to reformative treatment for a period of two years at Invercargill.
