STRATFORD.

A Midhirst dairy farmer states that lip to two days ago there has been scarcely any growth for a month. He had been relying almost wholly on the green feed he had grown, and in paddocks that had been closed during the winter, for feed for his cows. The warm rain during the past few days has had a very noticeable effect in pastures which are now showing a good growth. The monthly meeting of the Stratford School Committee was held on Monday evening. Mr. P. J. McDonald presidedA complaint was received from Mrs. C. Eell, of Warwick Road, about the failure of the committee to proceed with the cocoa scheme this year. The chairman said he had received quite a. number of verbal complaints, but verbal dissatisfaction had been removed by giving reasons for the delay. It was decided to write to Mrs. Bell pointing out the many difficulties in the way of carrying out the scheme this year. The Education Board wrote stating that, as a result of the increase in the average attendance, Miss Fitzgerald had been appointed ninth assistant in the school as from October 6. On the motion of Messrs. Pinhey and Smart it was resolved that the letter be referred back to the Board, and that the Board be asked why the names of suitable teachers had not been submitted to the committee prior to the Board making the appointment, and why more male teachers were not appointed to the school. The Education BoaTd wrote stating that more than the £3 ahuady promised could not be granted for repairs to stove and piping in the infant room. The headmaster reported that for the quarter ended September 30th., the average attendance at the primary school had been 57fi, and at the secondary school 109. making a total of 745. The attendance at the high school, which was the lowest for a long tin;e, had been affected by the restricted railway sen-ice. The attendance at the school frequently reached SOO, and for thai number there was not sufficient accommodation, even when using daily all the rooms in the Technical School. If the usual increase in the attendance takes place at the beginning of next year one of the. halls in the town would : iv e to be secured It was decided to draw the attention of the Board to the state of the roofs. It was reported that the headmaster did not deem it advisable to compete for the Tisch Shield for the best-kept gardens. The visiting committee (Messrs McDonald and Foster) were given authority r<» repair *he storm-water drain at a cost not exceeding £5. A special meetinc; of the committee will be held on Thursday evening to discuss the laying of the foundation stone of the new school. The Stratford Football Club are holding their annual ball in the Town Hall on Thursday evening. The committee ar» making the fullest preparations for the event, and a very large crowd is expected. The music will be supplied by Fox's orchestra, and a sit down supper will be provided. Mr. J. W. Boon is suffering from an inji.'ry to his knee. Mr. N. Kivell, who is leaving Stratford for Wellington, was entertained at a complimentary social at Mr. Smith's tea rooms last evening bv the .member? of the Stratford Football Club. On behalf of the club and his friends. Mr. Kivell was presented by Mr. R V. Harkncsi; (chairman) with a pocket wallet. Songs and oilier items were given by Messrs. .lainieson, Hunt, Walsh. H. Masters, K. Rogers, R. Coutts. and N Kivell. A number of toasts were honored. A social and dance will be held on Wednesday, October 15. in the Midhirst Hall in aid of the Church of England funds.

A general meeting of the Strn.tf.ivl Liberal League will be held in the Parish Hall 10-morrow (Thursday) evening. All with Liberal tendencies are cordially invited to attend.
