NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. The General Purposes Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council met last night, there being present: lli3 Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess), Crs. V. Griffiths, R. L. Parkin, J, W. Hayden, F. J. Hill, W. F. Short, J. Clarke, W. A. Collis, and A. S. Brooker. FITSfaoY REQUIREMENTS. Messrs E. Griffiths and James Kibby, I on behalf of the Fitzroy Ratepayers' Association, waited on the council with a view to having the Devon Street entrance to Mangorei Road widened. Efforts had been made to get the owners to make an offer to sell to the council, and, while one had made an offer, the one on the opposite side had failed to respond to inquiries. The deputation suggested that perhaps the land in that site might be acquired under the Public Works Act. It was decided that the council would take steps to try to induce the owner concerned to make an offer to sell. The' Fitzroy Ratepayers' Association wrote calling attention to the condition of the water tables on both sides of Kowhai Street at its junction with Devon Street. The pipe was too small to take the storm water, with the result that in wet weather the path and roadway were flooded. The engineer reported that the culvert pipes appeared to be of ample size to carry off the water. He undertook to place them under observation during rainfall. It was resolved that the council could not see its way to do anything in the matter at present. HARBOR IMPROVEMENTS. The Secretary of the New Plymouth Harbor Board wrote in regard 'to tlie proposal to erect an over-bridge approach at the intersection of Pioneer Road with the Breakwater Road in connection with the future improvements and extensions of the harbor. This was found j necessary to avoid a level crossing and enable Pioneer Road to be used for heavj' traffic to and from the board's future wharves. In connection with the contemplated widening of the Breakwater Road, the board suggested that it might' be able to arrange with the council for the borough to include in the lands. to be taken for the widening of the road the lands, comprising roods 17 perches, necessary 'for future deviation of the road and over-bridge and ramps. The matter was referred to a committee consisting of Crs. Clarke, Parkin, | and Collis already set i(p to deal with some other Harbor Board matters. BEAUTIFYING WORK. The New Plymouth Beautifying Society wrote asking if the council would give the society control of Baines Terrace, from Vivian Street to Gilbert Street, and that part of the Huatoki River bank along Carrington Road, between Vivian I and Lemon Streets. Authority was | also asked to cut down and dispose of unnecessary trees in the area. The committee's wish was to clear the river of fallen trees, clean up the banks, and improve the footpath and plant suitable trees and flowering shrubs. The permission was granted, subject to the Reserves Committee of the council having ex officio representation on their committee during the. progress of the work. GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S VISIT. $ It was decided to present an official address to his Excellency the GovernorGeneral on the occasion of his forthcoming visit to New Plymouth, and general arrangements were left in the hands of the executive and Finance Committee. It is understood that-the official farewell ceremony will take place on Wednesday morning, October 15. GENERAL. The names of the executive of the newly-elected Western Park Committee, as submitted by the president, were approved. The Wailii Borough Council asked endorsement of a resolution urging the Government, to prohibit the export oi timber until the local markets are supplied—Received. Mr. Will Lawson applied for assistance towards the cost of producing an illustrated booklet descriptive of the province of Taranaki, and the council decided to ! accept his offer of 250 copies of the booklet for £3O. The town clerk was authorised to arrange for extra assistance in his office.
