BOXING.

HAWERA TOURNAMENT, At the Opera House on Thursday night lite first tournament of the Hawera Sports and Pastimes Club was held. There was some good form shown, some of the novices putting up quite a good performance. Hawera are indebted to the Wanganui club for sending up a good team. They had the satisfaction of securing the award in the bantam and featherweight and in the special match arranged between C Cann (Wanganui) and A. Hurrell (Hawera). The novice contests showed that the boys have considerable promise of development, and should, in the course of the season, put up good performances. The first was the bantams, S, Cann (Wanganui) meeting F. New (Hawera). The whole three rounds were keenly contested.-and after a keen match Cann, though scaling Dibs less than his opponent scored a well-deserved win. One of the best events of the evening was the open featherweight, in which M. Foley (Stratford) 8.8, and R. Duigan (Wanganui) 9.0, were matched. Foley had not the condition of his slightly heavier opponent. Nevertheless he put up an excellent struggle, and went strongly till the bell" sounded. He scored frequently, but Duigan was just too good nad secured the verdict of the referee. A hurricane bout was that between A. Lee (Wanganui) and the popular Billy Coombe, ending in favor of the former on points. The latter took smilingly a great deal of punishment, and the contest was as billing as could be wished. After six rounds Lee scored a win. Phillips, of Wanganui, was matched with W. Day (Kaupokonui), in the nov- | ice lightweight. It proved a very in- | teresting meeting. Day, who. had only been under . tuition about half-a-dozen weeks put up a splendid fight right to the end of a keen contest.

In order to make a match, A. G. King took the place of Hogan. who was unable to be present. No award was given by the referee.

The greatest interest centred in the meeting of ft Cann (Wanganui) and A. Hurrell (Hawera). This proved a very even go, both men displaying'a good acquaintance with the fine points of boxing. Consequently, throughout four rounds, the match was followed with the keenest enthusiasm. The result was a verdict for Cann on points. The cone!;idin<r event was a brief and energetic contest between Galvin (Hawera) and J. Cann (Wanganui) in which the latter quite outmatched the Hav.-era man.

After the tournament the visitors wore entertained by the committee at a smoke concert in the Central Rooms, where a good spread was put on by Miss Almond.—Star
