TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Australian Jockoy Club's meeting will b« advanced anothor stage to-day, when the Metropolitan Stakes Handicap, of 5000 sovs, run over a mile and a half, and the Breeders' Plate, of 1500 sovs, run over six furlongs, will be the principal events. Afterglow Is engaged In the Metropolitan with 8.6, as well as Kpmark 9.0, Arch Marell 8,12, and British Arqh 7.0, and their showing will be of Interest to New Zeaanders. The latest betting quotations received from Sydney show that lan 'Or, and l'rluce Vlrdls were equal favorites, with Cetlgne, Tolson 4'Or,' Amazonia, Booster, and Cnrbern 'next in demand. Quite a good price was obtainable about Afterglow, and if the writer was there he would not mind taking some of It, though the race Is admittedly hard to win. Last season Afterglow sporM silk on fifteen occasions, and her record of six firsts, three seconds, and two thirds Included victories In the New Zealand St. Legsr, Great Northern StLeger, Taranakl Cup and Egmont Cup. all of which were accomplished In good stylo, and, being In good form, her prospects to-day appear 10 be much brighter than the betting would suggest. •
Surveyor is engaged In the Shorts Handicap' six furlongs, to-day, and In the Cllbborn Stakes, 9 furlongs. Rossini also figures In tho. latter event. In the Squatters'.Handicap, a mile and three furlongs, aro Karo, Afterglow, and Impediment.
Golden Bubble carried 21bs. overweight In the Rosehitl Guineas, and this probably accounted for his bare head defeat.,. Pew horses have scored in the Epsom Handicap with more than welght-for-age. Those successful were Marvel, 131b over; Sequence, lib over; and Hyman, 21b. over. In Saturday's race Itebus was asked to. carry 81b over, itlplane 71b„ Wolaroi 51b., Greenstead, and Cetlgne ;41b. each, and Molly!* Bobs 31b, ,Ttie last-named was considered the most likely one of the mares engaged to attract the attention of the Judge, but the records show the the sex has fared badly in the race, D.l!n Djin with 8.9 (41b. under "welght-for-age) being the nearest to the scale mentioned.
A Sydney paper naively remarks that the crack horemanm, Deraptey, after his experiences on Sasanbf, Surveyor, and Taunalw at Tattersall's meeting, is not very anxious to retain Messrs. Stead and Richmond's riding, and concludes, "As Dempsey Is a good horseman, and one whose services aro in strong demand, he naturally wishes to pick his mounts as far as possible." One can just Imagine little Hector itching to ride Sasanof and Surveyor. Australian scribes may alter their opinion of this pair before very long.
In tbe Spring Stakes at Boaehlll, Gloaming anil Wolaroi reduced the race to a duel. At the turn, W. McLashlan, on Wolaroi, thought he had Gloaming's measure, hut when Deeley gave the New Zealand-owned champion a kick he went Tight away, and won on the bit, It Wolaroi Is the best they have on the other Side, big, plain-looking donning will carry our 'arf-dollar.
