Referring to'Mr Wilkinson's Abolition of Toll-Gates Bill the chairman of the Hawera County Council said on Saturday that no doubt good would result from the Taranaki County Council's action which would draw attention to the requirements iu respect to main roads. The fishing season opened under unfavorable weather conditions here, says the Hawera *Star's Opunake correspondent. Those enthusiasts who faced the elements were well rewarded, good fish and plenty being found in the local streams. Mr Parkcs reports having se* curcd five splendid fish of a total weight of lSilbs.

At Saturday's meeting of the Hawera County Council the chairman referred to the heavy overdraft, and said that the rates were three months over due, the notices not having been sent out owing to valuation adjustments. Though some ratepayers did not know it. they could sue for the rates fourteen days after the notices had been sent, and they would have to take means for getting the rates in Bpeedily. Mr W. G. Reid, nmnager of the New Plymouth Sash and Door Company, who returned on Saturday evening by the mail train from a visit to the main trunk district, stated to a representative of this paper that even, with the resumption of the ordinary train service the difficulties regarding timber shortage were not yet overcome, for though the mills had been busily'cutting throughout the whole period, they were now faced with a shortage of railway trucks, and this was seriously retarding transport of timber which' was so urgently required. A case arising out of rather unusual circumstances was commenced in the Patea 'Magistrate's Court on Thursday last (reports the Press),.when Charles McQueen, manager, Mamitahi, sued Christian Hunger, Patea, for £f!9 in respect to injuries sustained through the nlnintiff being hit in the wrist by a bullet from a rifle fired by the defendant. Charles McQueen, tlie plaintiff, in his evidence, said that on March 26 last he went to Mr Hunger's house about G p.m. to get him to go down to his shop to get some paint and bolts. Mrs Hunger told him that Mr Hunger was out shooting hares. She directed witness to where defendant was, and he went to look for him. Witness could not find defendant, and was in the act of turning round to come back wj\cn he was hit in the wrist and hip. Witness tvent back to the house, and Mrs Hunger attended to the wound. Rhe said she ought to have told him that Mr Hunger was using a rifle. Mr Hunger then came up to the house and told witness lie had fired at a hare from the femetery gate. Witness heard the report of the shot, and it appeared to tome from that direction. The defence Was contributory negligence. When the defendant's case was closed the Magistrate (Mr Wyvern Wilson) said that, as the doctor's evidence was not available, lie would adjourn the ease until next Court day, on November fl. The N.Z. The management at Everybody's Theatre has secured a series of exceptionally attractive pictures for the next few months. Starting on Monday and Tuesday E. J. Carroll's fine Australian feature, "The. Lure of the Bush," will be the chief attraction. On Wednesday and Thursday a remarkable Fox special feature. "Woman and the Law," and a William S. Hart feature, "The Primal Lure," will be screened on the one programme. On Friday another complete change will be screened for that night only, when the chief feature will be a World tilm feature, "The Grouch," staring Montague Love. The big things of tlie week culminate on Saturday, when Hie Mack Sen Sett 8-reel wonder picture ''Mickey" will ■ cemißence a series of three nights and three matinees. Mr D. J. Hughes announces a further list of meetings in connection with his candidature for the Egmont seat. In a reference by Mr Hughes at Eltham concerning Mr Holland, the speaker said Mr Holland might to be in gaol on account of his war attitude. The qualifying words were inadvertently omitted by our correspondent.

The New Plymouth Marble Bar has been sold to a num'ber of New Plymouth business men, who have formed themselves into a limited liability company, and propose to conduct the business on new and up-to-date lines. Mr R. Page and his wife, until recently managing similar businesses in Wellington, have been engaged to take charge of the business, which has been temporarily closed down to permit of its complete reorganisation.
