DISTRICT NEWS.

WAI-TOI-TOI. (Prom Our Own Correspondent). Mr. .1. li Sly's clearing sale at the homestead on Saturday last was one of the most successful ever held in this district, top prices being realised for everything ottered. The dairy cows and heifers In profit and to calve averaged well over £3O, whilst the yearling heifers fetched £lO 10s, The other cattle and sheep also sold well. All the lines offered were in tip-top condition, and this, no doubt, contributed largely to the high prices obtained. Kidding was also brisk for the implements and household furniture, and all lines were quitted at satisfactory figures.

The factory is now getting Into full swing, both supply and yield compailng favorably with last season. Although there is only 17 gallons of milk more being taken in dally than at this period in 1018, one cheese per li.iy more is being manufactured, whilst the average test reads 3.77, as compared with 3.54. Tho extra yield and test is accounted for by .the better condition of the milk and higher test, no doubt attributable in a grcal measure by tho excellent manner in which the cows have- been wintered.

On Tuesday evening last tho "hard-up" basket social in aid of the dklrict memorial fund was hold in the Urcnui Hall As was anticipated, there was a large attendance, visitors being present from New Plymouth and Waltara, and the Ladies' Committee are to be complimented on tho maimer in which the arrangements were carried out. There were quite a number of baskets put up for auction, and Mr. D. de Forges (who is a new arrival in Urenni and has Joined Messrs. Dunbar's staff) wielded the hammer most effectively, and the lots were all disposed of at very satisfactory prices. The music was gratuitously contributed by Mrs. Arnold George, of New Plymouth, and Misses Skelton and Tervlll, and, it' is needless to say, proved quite satisfactory. The duties of M.C. were ably filled byMr. G. N. Skelton, and all the committee worked hard to make the evening pass off successfully. It is understood that tho fund will benefit by nearly £2O, which must be considered very good Indeed. Considerable Interest is being evinced in these parts in ihe New Plymouth Borough Council's scheme for harnessing the Walwakaiiio River, and by this means enabling the whole of Taranakl to lie supplied with electricity. Should this eventuate, it is considered to be one of the most progressive steps ever taken in the district, and sincere hopes are expressed that the Council will be able to carry it through successfully, more especially as tile Government's munificent vote of £600,000 for hydro-electric schemes will speedily be cut out In commissions and preliminary expenses for schemes which might or might not eventuate in 20 or 30 years.
