MINING OUTLOOK CRITICAL. By Telegraph— Press Assn.—Copyright Capetown. Oct. 2. Reports from .Tohannoslhurg state that the mining outlook, despite the recent appreciation in the value of gold, is still regarded as critical. ' The chief cause of anxiety is the enormously increased contributions required for the miners' phthisis fund. It is now recognised that the Government estimates are jarcatlj below the mark, and it is urged in mining circles that the State must assume a substantia! share of the new burden, or the mines will stop producing. SATISFACTION IN SOUTH-WEST. Capetown, Oct. 2. A Pretoria message states that the editor of Volkstem, who is visiting the South-West Africa Protectorate, writes that thp German population is highly appreciative of the wise and moderate regime of the Administrator, and considers incorporation with the Union the most desirable settlemcnl of the situation. They resent the Nationalist opposition to the acceptance of the man-date—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
