It is very 'unfortunate that the weather is rough for the soldiers' welcome home ball to-nigh I. f frail preparations have been made during the past two or three days to get ilc.trick's building ready for the occasion. It has been decorated with ferns* nikaus, and bamboo, and, with ■the colored lights which have been hung in all parts of the building, should present a very pleasing aspect by to-night A special, meeting of the Borough Council was held last night to consider the question of calling applications for the position of waterworks overseer and road foreman, vacated by Mr. G. Fear, [t was decided to call for applications for a waterworks overseer and a road foreman separately, also for the position of sexton.

A meeting of those interested in the promotion of sports on the Camp Reserve on Labor Day was held on Tuesday evening, Mr. W. R. Procter in the chair. It was decided to invite the Minister of Defence to be present on the occasion, and unveil the tablet on which is inscribed the names of members of the Clifton Football Club who have participated in the late war. A good programme is to be provided. A sub-com-mittee was appointed to wait on Mr. Hughes, re organising the band for the occasion, and haka and poi dances are to be provided if possible. The . officerj appointed were: Judges, Messrs T. Taylor, J. Telfar, and R. J. Bennett; handicappers, Messrs R. Tate and T. Fowler; starter, Mr. R. Tate; timekeeper, Mr. E. H. Jones.
