STRATFORD.

For the past month,. 15 births, 5 deaths, and 3 marriages were registered at Stratford. On Tuesday, the engineers ot the Hawera, Eltham, and Stratford County Councils visited the mountain quarries with a view to making investigations into the quantity and quality of the stone for road-making purposes. The inspection, was the result of a movement by the Eltham County Council, which is satisfied that suitable metal cin be obtained from the mountain quarry, and had asked other local bodies to join in an effort to have the quarry opened up. The engineers appear to have been very favorably impressed, and will report to their respective councils later. Last evening the Fire Brigade ran off a two-man coupling event (dry). There were six entries. Motorman W. Brocklebank and Fireman W. Milne were first, and E. Brocklebank and P. Aitken second. In these days of high cost of living it is a relief to find something to purchase at the old pre-war prices. Just now ladies will find at C. E. James', Broadway, Stratford, a display of Leather Hand Bags at the old value. They an; a special purchase, and are selling at one price, 7/6 each.
