JOURNALISTS IN CONFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Nigh'. At the annual conference of the New Zealand Journalists' Association, which was hehl at Christchurch, at which journalists from all parts of the Dominion were present, it was unanimously resolved that this Association place-- on record its strong disapproval of the practice which is glowing up on the part of . public speakers of making general and unsubstantiated charges against the press and pressmen, alleging unfair reporting and bias; that the action of the three Wellington reporters in withdrawing from a recent meeting in consequence of such an attack is approved, and that it is desirable that newspaper proprietors should, for the protection of their staffs from slanderous attacks, support (heir reporters when they are forced by such attacks to withdraw, or otherwise protest. It was stated at the conference, in justice to the Wellington newspaper?, that the withdrawal of the reporters in the case referred to in the resolution was upheld by the proprietaries of t'.ieir respective newspapers. * LABOR STARTS A DAILY PAPER. Christchurch, Last Night. • The Canterbury Trades and Labor Council has deckled to take shares in the West Coast Labor daily paper, whicl is starting this week. The plant of the Grey River Argus has been tak.oi over, as well as the goodwill of the journal, by the Labor Unions of the West Coast, and the intention is to run the new paper from now onwards as a Ijabor daily. DAIRY FARMERS' NEEDS. Whakatane, Sept. 27. An important meeting of the East Coast Dairy Association, held at Whakatane, was attended by representatives from Opourio, Opotiki, Waiohaki, Wai. mana, Cheddar Valley, and Rawera. It was resolved that the chairman, Mr. Walter Reed, should ask the Hon. W. D, S. MaeDonald to recommend the Government to proceed with his scheme to establish a grading centre at Whakatane. The supplies in sight for shipping through this port were estimated at SSO tons of butter and 12,14 tons of cheese.
