At Omaha, Nebraska, a mob numbering many thousands lynched a negro ' charged with assaulting a white girl. They rampaged through the city, set lire 1 to the county courthouse costing a million and a half dollars, pulled the • negroes off the tram cars, and bea? and - shot them. Many are believed to have - been killed, and scores wounded. 1 The mob charged the city jail, desiring ■ to take out the negro prisoners whom • the police carried off in automobiles. The police were powerless, and the military are awaiting authorisation from Washington to take control of the city. l The mob broke into hardware stores 1 and carried off firearms, which were used t against the police and the negroes.
