COAL SUPPLIES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 27. In a letter- to Mr Massey, Mr Pryor, secretary of the Coal Mine Owners' Association, says:—The owners are of opinion that no good purpose would be served by agreeing to a further conference. They have already been put to an expense of £I2OO in connection with the dispute. They have conceded everything possible and should not be asfced to meet those whose action shows that they are 'determined to secure by force what they can't secure by any other means. The employers look to the Government and the public generally to support them in the attitude they have adapted in opposition to the advocates of force and direct action. The association, -hdwever, is prepared to waive any technical objections in regard to rushing industrial agreements on the owners to secure a conference at each mine by means of the Conciliation Council. TAX ON MOTOR TYRES. Wellington, Sept. 27. In the course of a deputation to-day Mr C. M. Banks, representing the Motor Union, stated that next week motorists would probably make an offer to be taxed for better, roads. When asked how the money would be raised he said by a 20 per cent tyre-tax, which would be sufficient to pay interest on p. loan of £3,000,000. Mr Massey and Sir William Fras'er both welcomed the suggestion, but the former said it was unlikely that legislation would be possible this session.
