"«» GENERAL MEETING. i A general meeting of the above branch i if the New Zealand Education Institute was held on Saturday. The president (Mr. W. A. Curteis) presided over a failattendance. Thirty two new members were elected, making the total membership 261. i The AVellington branch asked support for a proposal that junior teachers (pupil teachers) be dispensed with and all re- . emits to the teaching profession should I enter as probationers, not form an in- : i tegral part of the school staff, and all . I the present junior teachers to be replaced jby assistants. It -was advisable that all , probationers should come under the eye Jof the Training College authorities , ' Where it was impossible to collect thcrn j into the Training College, the studies ot . | all probationary teachers should be con- . j ducted by specially appointed teachers, j whose duty it would be to collect their ! students into convenient centres. It was r , resolved to support the proposal. > ; Mr. Howarth proposed that the Tarai i naki Education Board should impress - j upon the Education Department the r necessity of establishing a Training ColB \ lege for teachers in Tarana!;:, and at. the v j aine time urge the neees.-ity for the '-tahlishment of University extension e lecturers in Taranaki. —Seconded by Mr. t Barry. e Mr. Henderson proposed as an amendo' ment that the Education Department > provide increased accommodation for n Training College students at the font •i University centres. This was seconded by Mr. Sims, and carried. It was resolved to support the proposal of the Canterbury brajich that floor space and staffing of schools should bo based on the weekly roll instead of on average attendance. It was pointed out that calculation on average attendance acted very detrimentally in Taranaki on account of the large number of wet days. Miss Laird moved and Miss Andrews I seconded that in schools of Grade Ve and , upwards the infant mistress should have the same salary as the fir.4 assistant. This .was carried on a division, j Mr. J. Thomas gave a report on the recent meeting of the Grading Appeal Board. He stressed the point that appealing teachers should send the teacher representative on the Appeal Hoard hill particulars of their cases. Mr. Curteis moved that the Department be asked to supply the teachers' representative with a copy of each teacher's appeal.— Seconded by Mr. D. P. Evans, and carried. The secretary reported that five nomie nations had been received for representar Uvea to the Annual Conference, to be hcl.l o in Wellington in January—Misses E r Andrews and E. P. Laird, Messrs K ), Bary, W. A. Curleis. and O. J. Howarth. e Voting papers would be sent out next week to every member of the Institute. 0 Mr. Thomas proposed that the superii , animation allowance to teachers' widows - be increased to at least £.l a week.— It Seconded by Mr. Henderson, and carried. 1 Messrs Curteis, Howarth, and Insull " were congratulated on being appointed 1 organising teachers for Taranaki. e A recent appointment made by the - board wa< brought up, and referred to - the executive. t v
