WHAT THE GERMANS ESCAPED.

DESTRUCTION OF BEKIJN. London, July«3l. Berlin was lucky in the date of the armistice. Another few weeks, or even days, and we should have been dealing destruction out over the German capital. There were several methods in preparation. We possessed the first essential— aeroplanes capablo of making the trip over the capital from our lines. And we had some special explosives for their use- There were huge bombs as big as postboxes, which would have created a. stunning detonation, being solid high explosives, and following these would have come, when the Berlinei's were taking shelter from the terrific big explosions, showers of small cannistcrs, hundreds from each of our raiding aeroplanes, containing a new kind of thermite. Set a part of this substance alight on a steel shovel, and, apart from the fierce flame that would blind anyone looking at it, the chemical would immediately cat right througn the steel. The heat developed is tremendous, and would have gone through auy building from roof to basement, setting everything aflame. Had the war continued the Berliners and other German townsfolk, would have had cause to rue the day they danced over the alleged ruins of London. They would have been hoist with more than their own petard.
