Tho case of Francis Hugh Snow, who was charged with trading with the enemy during practically the whole war period, has concluded. The accused was fined £2OOO and costs. Though a rush of investors occurred yesterday, the last day for subscriptions to the Peace Loan, it is understood that the total is far short of the requirements, and compulsion is anticipated. PROTECTING PENGUINS. Sydney, Sept. 24. Recently, through tho columns of the Herald, a great outcry was raised agani3t the alleged wanton desf ruction of penguins on Maequarrie Island, for their oil. Tho Premier of Tasmania, to which State the island belongs, has now stated that it lias beon decided not to renew th e lease of the island, which expired in August, to Captain Hatch.— Aus, N.Z.
