HARNESSING THE WANGAEHU RIVER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. Investigations by local engineers here proved the possibility of generating uOOO h.p. by a hydro-electrical scheme on the Wangaehu River, close to Wangauui. The source of the river ia Hear Mt. Dunedin, Laßt Night. As the result of the "go-slow" policy, the output of the Taratu mines has been reduced by fully one-third. It is understood that unless the men revert to thj normal working the management will close one mine and work only one. A stop-work meeting was held by the miners this morning, but was adjourned. SEA CARRIAGE OP BENZINE. Napier, Last Night. A reporter interviewed a number of shipping and business men to-day on the allegations made by Mr. Young, secretary of the Seamen's Union, against the Napier steamers concerned in loading and handling benzine. The steamers in question, the Koutonui and Kiritona, are staed to be insulated, therefore the bulkheads must be air-tight, and not open at the bottom, as Mr. Young alleges- The opinion generally expressed was that any damage to the tins was due to rough handling by the watersiders, who ridicule requests to be more careful. Fatal accidents are generally due to this cause.
