AMERICAN Base at yap island. By Telecraph —Press Asan —Copyright. ' London, Sept. 2G, British naval strategists regard President Wilson's claim to the island of Yap, in the Cai'oline group, as importantly affecting the future balance of the forces in the Pacific. It appears that the destruction of Yap was referred to a special conference, which will later delude the questions concerning ihe German cables taken over during the war. President Wilson admits that the American claim to the island is due to a strong Teport from naval experts, who insist on the necessity of American bases in the Western Paciflc. This may be inspired primarily by American interests in the Philippines, but America's 'Vision to straddle the Pacific obviously vv.il lime an important bearing on the defence of Australasia.—Aus.
