AMERICAN STEEL WORKERS' STRIKE, CLASHES WITH THE POLICE. By Teleeraph.— I'.-ess Assn.—-Copyrijht. Received Sept. 22, 1-0.10 p.m. New York, Sept. 21. Reports received from dozens of cities, including Chicago, Calumet, Pittsburg, Birmingham, New York, Wheeling and other steel districts indicate that more than half a million steel workers will be atVected by the strike, beginning after midnight on the 21st inst. Most of the organisers cautioned the men against violence. A thousand deputies and special policemen have been sworn .in in the affected districts. Small disturbances occurred at Calumet, where the organising strikers stoned the policemen. It is estimated that aliens of 28 nationalities are among the strikers. Gary, of the United States Steel Corporation, refused to comment upon the situation. According to a message from Pittsburg the steel strikers' meetings wore broken up at McKee's Port, North Clairton and Glasaport. The State constabulary charged the crowds. Several worker's were clubbed. Shots were fired and a dozen arrested.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. THIS BAKERS' STRIKE. , Sydney, Sept. 22. The Bakers' Union has decided to discontinue supplies of bread for hospitals and asylums. Received Sept. 22, 9.45 p.m. Sydney,, Sept. 22. Responding to the bakers' decision, the pastry cooks and carters are balloting on the question of striking tc morrow. The move is interfiled to fur* titer curtail the supplier of bread, although the masters arc optimistic thai they will be able to meet demands.
