Dr. Walker received cable advice from Glasgow yesterday of the death of his mother at the age of 84 years. Among the airmen of the R.A.F. who arrived at Wellington by the Manuka last week was Second-Lieut. E. Kindberg, of New Plymouth. The National News states that the Earl of Athlone is to succeed the Duke of Devonshire as Governor-General of Canada in 1920.
The many friends of Mr. John 0. Schischka will be pleased to learn tliat lie is making a good recovery after his recent serious operation. Professor G. Owen, who has filled the chair of physics at the Auckland University College since 19914, will leave Auckland iu about six weeks' time to take up the position of professor of physics at the University - College of Wales at Aberystwyth. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday afternoon of Mr. James Macintosh, one of the directors of Wright, ■Stephenson arid Co., and chairman of directors of the Wellington Publishing Coy. Mr. Macintosh returned last week from Sydney, where he had gone for medical advice.—Press Assn. The King of * the Belgians has conferred upon Mr. Hugh J. Wa~l, managing director in Sydney of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., the Cross of Chevalier of the Order of Leopold 11. Duting the war Mr. Ward's activities on behalf of patriotic and other causes resulted in large sums of money being raised, including £'21,000 from a matinee at Her Majesty's, Sydney, in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund, and £142,000 from the Belgian Day Appeal organised by him. Mr. John Downs, an old and respected resident nf this district, died at New Plymouth on Monday. The late Mr. Downs came to New Zealand about 45 years ago and started work at the local foundry under the then proprietor, the lale Mr. J. M. Vivian. Later Mr. Downs was in the employ of the Government at the Sentry Hill and Petone workshops, but about 25 years ago he retnrned to New Plymouth and entered the employ of Mr. P. W. Okey, and later Okev and RoDo, at the foundry. The late Mr. Downs always .took a keen intercut. in the progress of youths entering the foundry to take up engineering work, doing everything he possibly could by way of instruction to help them along.
