ELTHAM.
[(From Our Own Correspondent.) September 11,
The movement started bv the Eltham Comity Council with a view to obtaining supplies of metal from the Mount Eglnoiit reserve, near Waipuku, is receiving general support from other local bodies in Taranaki, and something definite should be done shortly. There is good reason for believing that metal of the right quality is available on the reserve in quantities to meet all demands, and the opening up of an accessible quarry would greatly relieve the somewhat serious position due to the exhaustion of other sources of supply and the heavy demand for metal resulting from the pursuance of a vigorous policy of modern road construction.
There will, it seems, he many formalities to go through before the general by-laws framed by the By-laws Conference can bo brought into force,, and it is thought that the greater part of a year will elapse before every requirement of the statute will be met. In their present form the by-laws iorra a very bulky mass, and the typing alone of the copies, which will have to be sent to the different local bodies interested, will involve a good deal of work. The adoption of the by-laws by the separate bodies, any one of which may make amendments necessitating further work by the conference and the secretary, Will probably mean much delay.
The Fanners' Co-operative Company purposes erecting, it is stated, a large new building in Eltham on the corner site opposite the present store and offices. From all "accounts the building is to be a v|ry substantial one, and will reflect the prosperity of the large area claiming Eltham as a centre, and also be in keeping with the progressive policy of the company, which Is rapidly extending its business operations. The borough council desired to obtain a portion of this section with the object of widening the street and cutting off the sharp corner, which, with the narrow street, made the turning of vehicles rather difficult at that point, especially when there is any congestion of traffic. One or two changes are taking place in the business portion of Eltham. A butcher's shop, which has long been without a tenant, is being altered and renovated preparatory to reopening, and an auctioneering business is, it is understood, being transferred from an old wooden structure to a concrete building on the main street formerly used as a motor garage.
