WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) September 11. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Crs. Ogle, Blair, Rennie, Jones, Bcckbessinger, ami Cibbon. Cr. Ogle presided, as the i\la,-nr was absent in Wellington on council business.

A letter from Mr. H. .Toll re sanitation charges was discussed, and it was decided that the clerk write to Mr. Joll and state- that the council had no knowledge of what he really claimed, and to ask him to forward some particulars of his claim, if any. The resignation of Mr. T. Buchanan as councillor was received and accepted and the necessary steps taken to fill the vacancy.

A request from the Waitara Fire Board for permisison to transfer lease of property on which the fire brigade station stands, from the council to the board, was granted. The secretary of the Seaside Committee wrote asking for permission to remove 50 loads of earth from McNaughtcn Street to put down a lawn at the beach. The matter was referred to (he Water and Works Committee, with power 1 to act,

A request from Mrs. W. and Mr. L. W. Birdling that the council take over the electric light line from Princess Street to their houses, so that the council could keep it in repair, was acceded to. The letter from the Taranaki Bowling Centre r R Saturday half-holiday was re'ceived. It was decided that the council could not see its way to send a delegate to the meeting, but that they were in favor of a universal Saturday half-holi-day and would give the oroposal their whole-hearted support. A letter from Mr. G. T. MoGonnell, Lepperton, asking that the council cut the water off from, his property after September 30, as it appeared there was likely to be a rise in price and he considered he was paying too much already. —lt was decided to cut the water off as requested.

A letter from the State Advances Office, asking that the council fix halfyearly dates on which interest on all moneys borrowed from them would be naid. instead of, as at present, interest being paid on several dates, was received. It was resolved to notify the office that the council would prefer to pay in January and July.

A petition from various ratepayers asking that a drain be dug down Whittnker Street from 'Nelson Street to Blake Street, to carry the water which at present ran through their properties, was considered and left in the hands of the Water and Works Committee to inquire into. A circular from the Moa Road Board re hydro-electric power was read. It was deoldsd to writ* the Moa Road

Board expressing the Council's sympathy with the movement, and that they Would give any assistance possible. The monthly Teport of the electrical engineer stated that expenses had been cut. down considerably during the last month, and that the plant was working well and at present little repair work was needed. The passing of accounts totalling £IOB2 10s 7d concluded the business. The s.s. Durham, which was expected to arrive here yesterday, has been delayed, and will not reach here till the end of the week. The death of a very old resident of Waitara, Mr. T. Dry'nan, occurred at Now Plymouth Hospital on Tuesday. The interment takes place at the Te Henui cemetery to-day.
