DEFENCE OF NEW ZEALAND.
COMMANDANT'S pPORT,
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Nigu». The report of the Commandant of the Forces was placed before Parliament today. _lt states that the experienoa gained in recent, years amply proves that a more concentrated period of training at the ages of 18 to 20 inclusive, instead of extending over tho ages of 18 to 25, as at present, is very desirable. The condensing of seven years' training obligation into three years would, he feels sure, prove much more economical and convenient'to industries and pastoral affairs.
The Commandant adds that the present training must be continued until the middle of next year. This will enable a policy for land, sea, and air defence to be discussed and formulated. The estimates for 1919-20 will be prepared on pre-war requirements under the Defence Act awaiting the development of the policy. He suggests the fortnatioii of a representative defence committee, advisory to the Government to study strategical problems of sea, land, and', air defence.
