FAULTY MANAGEMENT.
FARM MANAGER IN TROUBLE. ' By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Yesterday. Mr. Justice Herdman commented on the extraordinary nature of a case heard to-day. The Inchbonnie Estate Company (Mr. Wright) sued Joseph Thomas Searle for £4893, alleging that defendant, through faulty management and losing or failing to account for stock and wool, caused plaintiffs' loss. It was mentioned that defendant had written to plaintiffs' counsel that he would not attend the court, and did not know how the judgment would be satisfied.
Mr. Wright stated that defendant was manager of the estate, and failed to account for 291 cattle and 992 sheep, valued at £2780, and deliberately sent in false returns. The claim in regard to wool was withdrawn. '
Evidence was given that when asked where the missing sheep and cattle were defendant repeatedly replied: "In the bush," but witnesses were satisfied that this was untrue.
Mr. Justice Herdman said the police authorities should investigate the matter. He gave judgment for £2786.
