FORESTRY.
The Industries Committee recommend inter alia:— (1) That .there be established a Department of to determine what lands shall be permanently set aside as foiest reserves; also, that provision be made ensuring continuity and permanency of policy for definite periods of years, as has been done in New South Wales.
(2) That at the earliest moment a scientifically-trained expert shall be appointed as Chief Forester to determine what Crown Lands shall bo set apart for forest reserves: and, to recommend what areas of private land should be resumed for the purpose. (3) Speeding-up in the planting of quick-growing ' exotic trees, especially those suitable for butter-boxes, cheesecrates, and fruit and other packingcases.
.(4) Growth of native trees. (5) Restrictions upon export. ' (C) Reservation of forest areas. (7) Establishment of a chairman of. forestry in one of the university colleges. (S) Encouragement of local bodies to afforest catchment areas based on the acieage planted. (9) Establishment of a seed store for the supply of forest seeds. (10) Educating the public as to preserving forests from destruction by fire. Establishment of the wood pulp industry so as" to be independent of foreign supplies of paper. It is recommended that assistance by way of bonus for the first 0,00 tons manufactured.be given to any company having sufficient supplies oi suitable timber available to ensure the permanency of its operations. The committee recommend extensive planting of trees suitable for pulp manufacture. It is suggested that the poorer lands of the West Coast and Southland alford the most promising locations.
