GERMAN REQUEST DECLINED,
CHINA STILL AT WAR. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Aug. 28, 8 p.m. New York, Aug. 27. Advices from Pekin state that the Netherlands Minister, representing the German Government, requested the Chinese Government to alter the rule requiring German nationals to report to the authorities weekly to once a month. The Chinese Government replied that since China had not signed the treaty the war between China and Germany still continued and the enemy alien regulations could not be changed.—Aus. N.Z. JAPAN TAKING POSSESSION. Received Aug. 28, 8 p.m. Pekin, Aug. 27. It is reported that the Japanese authorities have begun taking over German and Austrian properties at Tsingtau. FINANCIAL RETRENCHMENT. Received Aug. 28, 8 p.m. Pekin, Aug. 27. It is understood the Chinese Government has decided, beginning on September ], to disband 25,000 troops monthly, in order to retrench financially. Plans are now being considered for extensive reorganisation of the Chinese navy, following the reports of the Chinese naval mission which recently visited the Allies' countries. —Alls. N.Z. THE CHOLERA OUTBREAK. Received Aug. 28. 10.25 p.m. Pekin, Aug. 25. The cholera epidemic at Shanghai is spreading te nortk CJnrm It is reported there are 130 deaths daily at Mukden and 1000 at Harbin. The use of saline infusions is proving highly efficacious and reducing the mortality.—Reuter.
