NEW ZEALAND MEAT TRADE.
(RESOLUTIONS OF SELECT COMMITTEE. Palmerston N., Aug. 26. A large and representative meeting of A and P. Associations, associated farmers' freezing companies, and provincial executives of the Farmers' Union, recently held at Palmerston North, appointed a select committee to draft a report and nominate a commission to proceed to England. This committee has met and passed the following resolutions:— "That a commission .of one North Island representative, one South Island representative, one representative of the farmers' freezing companies of New Zealand, and one Government official, Dr. Reakes for preference, be nominated by this committee, with the following schedule of duties: (1) To proceed to England' to examine conditions and make representations to the Imperial Government concerning the ' New Zealand meat trade on the following lines: (a) That the Imperial Government be urged to give Dominion meftt priority of shipment and preference of sale over American meat purchased and still unsold by the Imperial Government; (b) that colonial meat be placed on the market at a priee that will mean neither profit nor loss to the Imperial authorities j (c) that the shipping of the meat, if possible, be further expedited, and an assurance obtained from the British Government to this effect; (d) that the terms of the commandeer be amended so that on June 30 next pie New Zealand freezing companies shall become agents of the Imperial Government for. the disposal of our meat through legitimate channels, subject to the wishes of their clients and the provision of clause 1, subclause (b). (2) If this is not practicable, that a proportion of the freezing companies' meat and a proportion of Imperial meat, to. be agreed upon mutually, shall be shipped from the Dominion, and as far as possible be kept entirely separate. " (3) That as a last resource, and failing other remedies, arrangements be made for a continuation of the commandeer.
(4) That the decision of the committee on these lines shall have the endorsement of the New Zealand Govern* ment, but in the event of new points arising the New Zealand Government shall be first consulted, and its decisions shall be binding upon the committee. (5) That Mr. W. D. Hunt be the prorepresentative for the South Island, Mr. W. J. Poison the producers' representative for the North Island, and Mr. Hugh Burrell (chairman of the associated fanners' freezing companies) be the freezing companies' representative, and Dr. Reakes Government representative." Immediately upon receipt of replies from the rest of the Dominion it is the intention of the select committee to ask the Government to formally appoint [the committee.
