RAHOTU. Another welcome home was tendered Hie other evening to Lieut W. ,1. Wright, Privates Meplclns. Shnrrock, unci Canclisli, and Trooper Wright Privates Sharrock ami Cnndlah were arable to he present. Very appropriate 9on(!B were sung by Misses Mason and Rowlands, nnd the iittle Misss M. Dawson, and D. Looney recltocl very nleely. A pianoforte duel was played by Hisses Chapman and Jamlcsou. Mr. Gibson was chairman, ami with ltev. Addonbroke welcomed the soldiers home and wished tnpiii every success In the future. The chairman presented the medals, calling unon the fc llowing ladie3 to pin them on the staldiers ■ Lieut. Miss Alice Hopkins accepted l'rlviiio Sharrocks' for him, and Private Candishs' is to bo presented at a later date, n.v special reiiuest of his father. "For They Are Jolly Good Follows" and throe cheers were given for the soldiers. Lieut. Wright responded for the soldiers. Supper was then announced, Mrs. Dawson, sen, having charge. On Thursday, Miss K. Taylor, fifth daughter cf Mrs. Taylor, waj united In holy matrimony to Mr. N. Popporill. Tho bride looked particularly well In » dress of cream crepe de chine, and wore tho usual veil and orange blossoms, and carrlod a bouquet of white liowers. A cousin «f the groom was brldesr maid, and looked very pretty In cream pink and blue hat, carrying a bouquet of white and lilac flowers. Mr. T. Taylor wa» groomsr..an, and Mr. Ell Taylor, brother of tl)e bride, p>vo her away, Miss Mabel Hughson presided at the organ, and Mr. King bfflciaflns «•■ minister. , A party was held In the evening at the bride's home. Tho -happy couple left for the south for their honymoon amidst rice and the good wishes of their friends. ■ A large surprise "kitchen parly" visited Mr. T. Fleming's house on Friday evening, the occasion being the approaching wedding of Miss Ellleen A large number of gifts were Landed In, hardly one.article bolng duplicated. At the football in New Plymouth It seoms Ite Raholu dairyfeds were victorious by 8 points to 6. The result of the new milk since the cows came In. MOKAU-AWAKINO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A Pierrot social and dance, organised by Misses W. Shell and A. Dames, took place In tho Mokau Hall on August 8, and was one of tho most successful functions held there. The proceeds were in aid of the hall Improvement fund, £6 10s being realised after all expenses were paid. The costumes of the plorrots and Pierrettes were very pretty, and the scene was very bright and sparkling.. Had a prize been given for the "belle of the ball," it would have been difficult to decide to whom tho honor was due: but mention must be made of Misses Margery Black, Marie Avery, Hazel 'and Mlnnlo Wolfe, W. Chapman, W. Shell, A. Barnes, and J. Stewart, who all looked charming. A very dainty supper was provided by th! ladies of Mokau, who always seem to know how to cater in tip-top style for the inner man. Oh for good roads and a regular coach service! When will that good time arrive when we can travel by car winter and summer? lust now, with disconnected conch and train services, the journey out Is a thing to be dreaded. Wo have noticed several lots of stock and sheep coming Into the different stations round here, so that noxt season thero should ha some fine- lines of fats going out to the freezing works. A Progressive League has been formed In the Awaklno, and is doing good work. Much needed Improvements are to be made In the hnll, and the town beautified In many ways. Mr. Wolfe, secretary, moons tho thing to be thorough A meeting was held In the .Awaklno Hall on August IG, to consider the form of the memorial to the soldiers of our district. It was decided that a concrete fence with an iron gate, having posts of concrete each having a marble slab containing the names of the fallen soldiers on the one side, and on the other, those of all tho soldiers who went from here. Awakino has done Its "little bit" surely, as well over CO boys left from there to defend their country, many of whom have niad'! the supreme sacrifice A strong committee, consisting of Messrs. Avery, Curumlngs, McNlece. Wolfe,, and Lake was formed to canvas for funds, Mr. Wolfe being secretary. A conversazione was held In the Awaklno Hall on August 23. The function was tendered by the young ladies of tho district to tho young bachelors. The supper tabic, which was most beautifully decorated by Misses M. Wolfe, and W. Chapman, was provided with loads of toothsome dainties About 1(1 couples fSat down to supper, and soveral toasts were honored. Dancing was indulged In, and vocal Items were given by Miss Bogg and Mr. Paynter, while some jolly good rousing choruses were sung by Misses Begg, Wolfe, Avery Thomson, Balnbrldge, end 'Chapman. Miss Gain made an excellent accompanist Music for the dancing was provided by Mesdnnies Thomson, Avery, Christolferson, and Misies Oaltt and Thomson. The cliapßronen wcro Mesdames Thomson, Avery, and Christolferson, and the function was most enjoyable. It is up to our bachelors now to return the compliment, and so keep the "social swing a-swlnglng."
It Is rumoured that Mr. T. Cummlngs, of Awakmo, intends standing for Parliament at the next general. election.
